Our character basically is a composite of our habits. Our thought determine our action. Our actions become habit and habits become character by which we are known. Sow a character, reap a destiny.
Habits are what we get to do regularly which become a part of us. They are consistent, often unconscious patterns that constantly, daily express our character and produce our effectiveness or ineffectiveness.
Habits have the power to make or break us. For one to be effective in life, to live a rich and productive life worthy of emulations, one needs to be a master of good habits and eliminating the bad ones. To make great things happened in your life, you've got to check yourself, examine your life, your attitude and habits and make amendments. An unexamined life is not worth living. Every habit that makes you ineffective or prevents you from being where you have so much wanted should be thrown away. Breaking old habits that have stick to us like second skin may not be an easy thing to do but it's not impossible.
Breaking deeply imbedded habitual tendencies such as procrastination, impatience, selfishness etc, that violate basics principles of human effectiveness is no quick fix. It involves tremendous efforts and commitment but once we break off the gravity pull, our freedom takes a new dimension.
PROCRASTINATION
One bad habit that is so common to most people and make them stagnant and unproductive is procrastination.
Procrastination is a thief of destiny, an enemy of progress. Procrastination is one habit that has rendered most people ineffective and lazy. It's a trait of the unsuccessful. Putting off to a later date what should be done right away and hoping or waiting for the prefect time to get it done. The truth is if you don't do it now, you may never get to do it because the prefect time may never come. And if it eventually comes, it may be too late.
To overcome procrastination, understand how important and valuable every minute, every hour of everyday is. Don't let your time slip through your fingers like a grain of sand while waiting for the perfect time.
Make it a habit to always take action whenever something important is to be done. You have got to be an action person to make things happened in your life, to be successful. Get down and get it done. Stop procrastinating. If you ever want things changed in your life, you have got to change it yourself. No one will do it for you.
If you are ever afraid of doing something for whatever reason, just do it or ask for assistant and the fear will vanish. The very fact that you did what you were afraid to do will set you free and make you feel like a new person. You will feel happy for doing it and think to yourself "that wasn't so bad afterwards." It improves your self confidence and gives you a can -do attitude.
Why empty anything out? It is to put something else in. To see the changes you so much wanted, to become a new you, a better person, you must get rid of the old habits that have been making you ineffective and replace them with new and rewarding habits that have the potentials of making you successful.
Whatever your present situation, always have it in mind that you are not your habits. Habits can be learned and unlearned. Though breaking old habit and replacing it with a new and rewarding one is no quick fix but it can be done. It's a gradual process that involves a lot of patience. You have got to be patient with yourself while you open the gate of change and growth. Self growth is tender. It may be difficult and challenging at first but nothing great comes easily. Soon, you will feel the benefits and see the immediate payoff that will be encouraging, as you replace old patterns of self-defeating behaviors with new patterns, new habits of effectiveness, happiness and trust.
